Beleg on the road to Amon Rudh, with the sword Anglachel and a pack of lembas.

Some people say that this winter forest looks too peaceful, not at all like dangerous First Age Beleriand.

I was inspired by a small black-and-white picture of winter forest.

You are welcome. It is really deserved. I like many of your works, at least in some ways.

I can see why people say it's too peaceful, because it is beautiful. But I think it looks dangerous enough as well- the trees are close together, so you can't see through them, and that creates suspense. Trees that tall so tight-packed is unnatural enough that it signals that it's not just another cute little stand of trees, too.

You're right, I intended to show anxiety and suspense.

At first, like this :

Thank you very much again for the fav given to the picture that is especially dear to me!

Well, I always thought that Beleg had not exactly blonde, but very light brown hair, I tried to render this color, but still it seems blonde (it is not a scan, and the distance is rather great). At first I have made a full-height portrait of Beleg (with Anglachel, and lembas pack and white fur-lined cloak) , standing on the background of some snow-covered fir branches and boles ( I still have it somewhere) , but then I changed my mind , and made him "dwarfed" , to show that "the world is wide" (Nellas' words again!):-))).

You know, this is amazing.. I always imagined Beleg with strawberry blond hair when I first read the Silmarillion.. even though I know all evidence points to him being dark-haired! He was always one of my greatest favourites.. I'll have to :+fav: this one too just for that (and the hair colour! ;))

I love the composition.. how he's dwarfed by the snow-covered trees.. truly alone in the wilderness! But still his pose is confident; he hasn't given up on his friend!
